Flavor Notes

Delicate jasmine and white tea florals open with a bright, wine-like acidity that cuts cleanly across the palate. Ripe stone fruits—peach and apricot—emerge alongside subtle bergamot and citrus zest, layering into a complex mid-palate. The body is silky and refined, with a whisper of honey and floral sweetness that lingers. The finish is extraordinarily long and clean, with lingering notes of white tea and a mineral undertone that speaks to Kona's volcanic soil. A truly rare expression of the SL34 cultivar, where terroir and meticulous processing converge into an unforgettable cup.

Brewing Guide

Recommended Brew Method: French press/ coffee press method. Also good as traditional drip methods

Grind Size: Medium-Fine

Water Temperature: 198–202°F (92–94°C) — slightly lower temperature preserves the floral aromatics

Coffee-to-Water Ratio: 1:15 (approximately 2 tablespoons per 6 oz of water)

Brew Time: 3–3.5 minutes

Tasting Tip: Brew at a smaller volume (6–8 oz) and allow the cup to cool slightly before tasting — the jasmine, peach, and bergamot notes become more pronounced as the temperature drops. Avoid dark roast brewing methods, which can mask the cultivar's signature florals.

Pairing Suggestions: Best enjoyed on its own to fully appreciate its complexity. If pairing, choose light accompaniments such as white chocolate, fresh stone fruit, or a mild honey cake.

Storage: Store in an airtight container away from heat, light, and moisture. Due to the exceptional rarity of this coffee, consume within 2–3 weeks of roast date for the fullest expression of flavor.Preferably in freezer.

Poppa Kona (SL34), the difference

Poppa Kona SL34 coffee represents one of the world's most distinctive and sought-after coffee varieties, fundamentally different from standard commercial coffee beans in origin, cultivation, and flavor complexity. Originating from the high-altitude volcanic slopes of Hawaii's Kona district, SL34 beans thrive in a unique microclimate characterized by rich volcanic soil, consistent rainfall, and elevation between 2,000 and 3,500 feet—conditions that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

The SL34 varietal itself is genetically distinct, featuring larger beans than most coffee species with an elongated, slightly flattened shape that distinguishes it visually from conventional varieties. This size difference reflects the bean's dense cellular structure, which develops slowly in Kona's cooler mountain environment and concentrates flavor compounds over an extended growing season. The result is a coffee with exceptional complexity, marked by bright acidity, citrus notes, and subtle berry undertones that emerge through careful processing and roasting.

Kona's strict cultivation standards further elevate these beans. Hawaiian law mandates that coffee labeled "Kona" must be grown within the designated Kona Coffee Belt, where volcanic minerals and consistent weather patterns create ideal growing conditions. Farmers typically hand-harvest ripe cherries, a labor-intensive practice that ensures only the finest fruit enters production. This meticulous approach contrasts sharply with mechanized harvesting used in many coffee-producing regions, where ripeness consistency and bean quality are compromised for volume.

The flavor profile of Poppa Kona SL34 coffee is notably balanced and vibrant, with a crisp acidity and medium body that appeals to discerning palates seeking clarity and complexity. The combination of terroir, varietal genetics, and artisanal processing creates a cup that commands premium pricing and loyalty among specialty coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

Poppa Kona Purity

Our Poppa Kona SL34 is sourced directly from select high-altitude estates where sustainable farming practices eliminate the need for synthetic pesticides. Each batch undergoes rigorous third-party testing to verify the absence of microtoxins and contaminants, ensuring a clean cup from seed to cup.

Unlike mass-market coffees that pass through multiple intermediaries and storage facilities—each introducing potential exposure to chemical treatments, moisture damage, and cross-contamination—our direct-from-farm approach maintains complete traceability and control. We communicate with Ulu ensuring soil health and natural pest management, resulting in coffee that reflects the terroir without compromise.

The result is a purer expression of origin: no synthetic residues, no hidden processing chemicals, no mystery in the supply chain. What you taste is the coffee itself.

History of the Poppa Kona

Kona coffee originates from the volcanic slopes of Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii, where the unique combination of rich volcanic soil, elevation between 2,000 and 4,000 feet, and consistent cloud cover creates ideal growing conditions. The Kona district, spanning roughly 2,000 acres on the western side of the island, is the only region in the United States with a federally protected coffee designation.

Poppa Kona SL34 carries a distinct lineage rooted in Kona's agricultural evolution. Coffee cultivation began in the 1820s when plants were introduced to Hawaii, and the variety thrived in Kona's microclimate. By the mid-1800s, the region had established itself as a significant producer. For over a century, Kona remained a regional specialty known primarily within Hawaii and among discerning mainland enthusiasts. The SL34 varietal—a cultivar originally developed in Kenya and later adopted by select Kona growers—represents a refinement of this heritage, bringing heightened complexity and clarity to the traditional Kona profile.

The variety's rise to international prominence accelerated in the late 20th century as specialty coffee culture expanded globally. Kona's distinctive profile—smooth body, low acidity, rich sweetness, and subtle nutty undertones with hints of spice—distinguished it from other single-origins. The SL34 expression amplifies these characteristics with greater acidity brightness and floral notes, creating a more nuanced cup. The strict regulations governing the Kona label, which require 100% Kona beans for the designation, established it as a benchmark for authenticity and quality in premium coffee markets.

Today, Poppa Kona SL34 commands premium prices that reflect its limited growing region, labor-intensive cultivation and harvesting, volcanic terroir, and consistently exceptional cup quality. It remains one of the world's most recognized and sought-after single-origin coffees, cultivated exclusively on the slopes of Mauna Loa. Its scarcity, demanding environmental conditions, and distinctive sensory profile make it a hallmark of specialty coffee culture and a symbol of Hawaiian coffee heritage.
