Flavor Notes

Delicate jasmine and white tea florals with a bright, wine-like acidity. Notes of ripe peach, apricot, and bergamot unfold on the palate, with a silky body and an extraordinarily long, clean finish. A truly rare and refined cup that reflects the unique character of the Gesha cultivar grown in Kona's volcanic terroir.

Brewing Guide

Recommended Brew Method: Pour Over (Hario V60 or Chemex) — this method best showcases the Gesha's delicate florals and nuanced complexity

Grind Size: Medium-Fine

Water Temperature: 198–202°F (92–94°C) — slightly lower temperature preserves the floral aromatics

Coffee-to-Water Ratio: 1:15 (approximately 2 tablespoons per 6 oz of water)

Brew Time: 3–3.5 minutes

Tasting Tip: Brew at a smaller volume (6–8 oz) and allow the cup to cool slightly before tasting — the jasmine, peach, and bergamot notes become more pronounced as the temperature drops. Avoid dark roast brewing methods, which can mask the cultivar's signature florals.

Pairing Suggestions: Best enjoyed on its own to fully appreciate its complexity. If pairing, choose light accompaniments such as white chocolate, fresh stone fruit, or a mild honey cake.

Storage: Store in an airtight container away from heat, light, and moisture. Due to the exceptional rarity of this coffee, consume within 2–3 weeks of roast date for the fullest expression of flavor.Preferably in freezer.

Origin & Region

Kona, Hawaii — Hualalai Volcano, Big Island, USA

Single-estate sourced from the upper volcanic hillsides above the Kona district, where the Gesha cultivar thrives in the mineral-rich soil of Hualalai. This once-active volcano provides the precise combination of elevation, drainage, and soil nutrients that give this coffee its extraordinary complexity. Available in strictly limited quantities, this is one of the rarest single-origin coffees produced in Hawaii.

Altitude & Processing

1,800–2,200 MASL (meters above sea level)

Grown at exceptional elevation on the slopes of Hualalai volcano above Kona, Hawaii. The Gesha Peaberry is among the rarest expressions of Kona coffee — a naturally occurring peaberry variant of the prized Gesha cultivar. Beans are hand-picked at peak ripeness and processed using the washed method to preserve the cultivar's delicate floral and fruit-forward character. Extremely limited quantities are produced each harvest due to the rarity of both the Gesha variety and the peaberry mutation.

Gesha bean, the difference

Kona Geisha coffee represents one of the world's most distinctive and sought-after coffee varieties, fundamentally different from standard commercial coffee beans in origin, cultivation, and flavor complexity. Originating from the high-altitude volcanic slopes of Hawaii's Kona district, Geisha beans thrive in a unique microclimate characterized by rich volcanic soil, consistent rainfall, and elevation between 2,000 and 3,500 feet—conditions that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

The Geisha varietal itself is genetically distinct, featuring larger beans than most coffee species with an elongated, slightly flattened shape that distinguishes it visually from conventional varieties. This size difference reflects the bean's dense cellular structure, which develops slowly in Kona's cooler mountain environment and concentrates flavor compounds over an extended growing season. The result is a coffee with exceptional complexity, marked by floral aromatics, jasmine notes, and subtle fruit undertones that emerge through careful processing and roasting.

Kona's strict cultivation standards further elevate these beans. Hawaiian law mandates that coffee labeled "Kona" must be grown within the designated Kona Coffee Belt, where volcanic minerals and consistent weather patterns create ideal growing conditions. Farmers typically hand-harvest ripe cherries, a labor-intensive practice that ensures only the finest fruit enters production. This meticulous approach contrasts sharply with mechanized harvesting used in many coffee-producing regions, where ripeness consistency and bean quality are compromised for volume.

The flavor profile of Kona Geisha coffee is notably smoother and more refined than standard beans, with a naturally lower acidity and fuller body that appeals to discerning palates. The combination of terroir, varietal genetics, and artisanal processing creates a cup that commands premium pricing and loyalty among specialty coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

Gesha Purity

Our Geisha Kona is sourced directly from select high-altitude estates where sustainable farming practices eliminate the need for synthetic pesticides. Each batch undergoes rigorous third-party testing to verify the absence of microtoxins and contaminants, ensuring a clean cup from seed to cup.

Unlike mass-market coffees that pass through multiple intermediaries and storage facilities—each introducing potential exposure to chemical treatments, moisture damage, and cross-contamination—our direct-from-farm approach maintains complete traceability and control. We work exclusively with growers who prioritize soil health and natural pest management, resulting in coffee that reflects the terroir without compromise.

The result is a purer expression of origin: no synthetic residues, no hidden processing chemicals, no mystery in the supply chain. What you taste is the coffee itself.

History of the Gesha

The Geisha coffee variety originated in Ethiopia, where it grew wild in the Geisha Forest in the southwestern region. In the 1930s, seeds were brought to Panama, where the variety was cultivated in the Boquete region's high-altitude microclimates. For decades, Geisha remained relatively obscure and undervalued, often mixed with other Panama lots.

The variety's transformation began in the early 2000s when specialty coffee importers and farmers recognized its exceptional cup quality—floral aromatics, jasmine notes, and complex fruit flavors that set it apart from conventional varieties. The name "Geisha" was formalized to honor its Ethiopian heritage, though it is sometimes spelled "Gesha" in historical records and certain markets.

Geisha gained international prominence around 2004 when Panamanian farmer Hacienda La Esmeralda entered their Geisha microlot into the Best of Panama competition and achieved record-breaking auction prices. This breakthrough established Geisha as one of the world's most sought-after and expensive coffee varieties, commanding premium prices that reflect its rarity, altitude requirements, and distinctive sensory profile.

Today, Geisha is cultivated in select high-altitude regions beyond Panama, including parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, and other specialty-focused origins. Its scarcity, demanding growing conditions, and consistently exceptional flavor make it a benchmark for premium single-origin coffee and a hallmark of craft roasting and specialty coffee culture.
